Djibouti
Founded by the French in 1888, the city became the capital of the Somali French Coast in 1896 and was a stopping point on the route to Indochina. A free port in full expansion, Djibouti lost some of its importance during the closing of the Suez canal (1967-75), and later with the Ethiopian revolution and Ogaden war.
The whitewashed city of Djibouti with its flat roofs seems to float on the sea. The old neighborhoods are filled with merchants who set up their stalls right on the sidewalks. Here at the horn of Africa you'll already encounter the charm of the east.
