Hire a car and explore Barbados for yourself!
There are numerous car hire companies in Barbados offering rugged jeeps, stylish air-conditioned cars and mini mokes - perfect for going anywhere on roads, paths or sand. A great experience for your holiday!

Licence - If you have a driver's licence, you can easily obtain a visitor's permit at the airport, major car rental agencies or the police station for just $10 BDS by presenting your Canadian or other driver's licence.

Keep in mind that you drive on the left - a hazard for the unaware!

Drive like a Bajan: smile and be familiar with the following main points:

  • a honk of the horn doesn't always mean "watch out," but maybe "hi!" because the driver has recognized a friend or wishes to greet and welcome a visitor with a rental plate.
  • at an intersection, if a driver signals you by flashing his headlights, he's giving you priority in a roundabout; always take the right lane and drive in the left lane only when you intend to take the next exit;
  • Rush hour: 7:30-8:30 a.m.; 4:30-5:30 p.m.

Buses
Barbados has a national bus system offering regular service throughout the island. You can easily recognize buses by their blue color and yellow stripe.

The two stations are located in the Bridgetown area:

  • Fairchild Street for buses heading south and east
  • Lower Green for buses going north and to the west coast.
  • Speightstown to St. Peter

There are also two private mini-bus companies offering more frequent service for shorter distances. They are recognizable by their bright yellow color. The cost is the same. The main stations are located at:

  • Probyn Street
  • River Road
  • Temple Yard

Taxis

Taxis are identified by a number plate beginning with ZR.

Taxis do not have meters; the rates are set by law. To be on the safe side and to know what to expect, always ask the driver the price of the trip before setting out. You can even check rates with the concierge at your hotel.
