Welcome to Vancouver

Visit Canada > British Columbia > Vancouver Getaway

This gateway to the Pacific Rim is sassy, sophisticated and outdoorsy. It's a city with cosmopolitan attitude offering all the very best of world class destinations: superlative shopping, exceptional dining, great entertainment, galleries and an infinite number of other activities. Aboriginal culture and cobblestone streets nestle alongside gleaming skyscrapers of glass and steel. And you can't help notice a strong multicultural mix (that means great food, fun festivals and colourful markets). Take a stroll through Chinatown and chances are, you'll wonder if you're really in Hong Kong.

As summer slips into fall and winter, Vancouver starts to rock and roll with world class Broadway shows, top-draw theater and action-packed professional sports. This is the time to take advantage of seasonal rates at deluxe hotels. The crowds ease off and getting reservations to the city's finest restaurants is practically assured.

Just steps from the downtown core, there's outdoor adventure at every corner. Rent kayaks on Granville Island and tour the city's shoreline by water; join hikers up the Grouse Grind, a 45-degree vertical ascent of Grouse Mountain; or pick any number of outdoor activities such as biking, inline skating and skiing, all within a few minutes' drive.

Gateway to the legendary thousand-mile inside Passage - a wondrous maze of forested islands, glacier-carved fjords and frontier-friendly ports - Vancouver serves as the point of embarkation and disembarkation for extraordinary cruise vacations. From May to October vessels arrive and depart Vancouver's harbour as part of the Vancouver-Alaska route, the third most popular cruise in the world.

For a low cost, fun transit option, jump on the SeaBus or False Creek AquaBus as part of Vancouver's unique public transportation.

Weather
Warmed by Pacific Ocean currents and protected by a range of mountains, Vancouver's weather is mild year-round. From high 70's Fahrenheit (low 20's Celsius) in summer to a mild mid 40's Fahrenheit (0º to 5º Celsius) in winter, the climate is always hospitable. Winters are wet, but it rarely snows, except on the local ski hills.
