Auberge du Lac Saint-Pierre

Welcome to Canda > Quebec > Mauricie > Pointe-du-Lac > Auberge du Lac Saint-Pierre

This inn of wood and glass, located midway between Montreal and Quebec City, on the outskirts of Trois-Rivières, stands majestically over the St. Lawrence in an enchanted setting, at the point where the river widens into an 18 km lake. We are at Pointe-du-Lac, once known as "Indian Point," a village founded in 1738 on the very site of the Attikamegw tribes' summer camp.

Four seasons of delights
While a number of  large hotels close their doors at the first autumn chill, the Auberge du Lac St-Pierre is a favorite destination 12 months of the year.

It's a pleasure to laze in the sun in a lounge chair, watching the boats glide along the river, to stop at the lookout, then to descend the big wooden staircase to the shore and enjoy the shade of the old oaks. You can dine or sip an iced tea under an umbrella. The outdoor pool is a good size and surrounded by lots of lounge chairs. Doze in the sun's caress, and when you open your eyes again the river and lake will still be there awaiting you seductively.

Depending on the season, you can marvel at the great bird migrations. It's for good reason that UNESCO has named Lake Saint-Pierre a world biosphere reserve. Large herons, ducks, Canada geese and snow geese gather in front of the inn.

For a hiking or cycling excursion, or for snowshoeing or cross-country skiing in the winter, the Auberge lets you discover the nearby seigneurial forest of Pointe-du-Lac and the old mill, a historic site dating back to 1656. After touring the mill, discover another jewel from the past: the three-century old forest acquired by the Auberge. You can stroll along its magnificent paths and well-marked trails. The little St. Charles river meanders through. Here you'll see a little bridge, there a tiny waterfall, over there a patch of strawberries and blackberries to be picked in season.

A restaurant worth many a detour

Alain Penot's cooking is a revelation, setting the standard for cuisine in the Mauricie region. He takes the time to create and to balance, all with boundless imagination. Even in his simplicity, you'll discover extraordinary flavors.

Shy, like many artists, he surrendered gradually. He knows his products and knows how to make them reveal their own distinctive personalities, whether he's working with elk, goat's cheese or new vegetables.

The menu is sophisticated. It's not designed with fancy names that prove a disappointment when you take your first bite. Instead, it's a menu filled with little hidden treasures.

Alain is supported by an energetic team, whose talent he acknowledges. All the desserts are prepared on site and his pastry chef, Isabelle, was named 2001 pastry chef of the year in Mauricie.

The spacious rooms have a large bed, quiet electronic climate control, a coffee maker and bathrobes. Beginning at 7 a.m. coffee and newspapers are available in the sunroom where the zebra finches chirp in the aviary. Be sure to stop at this country inn, where the local people are simple and open-hearted.
