River Doree
This scramble has been called thrilling, inspiring, wild, exhilarating and awesome! One thing it isn’t, is tame.
You abseil into a gorge that goes down 120 feet and land with your feet on the sand bank of a shallow river. If you don’t know how, our guides will teach you, but abseiling feels like a controlled freefall. (There’s a walk for those who have second thoughts) Going down you proceed from sunlight into dark forest and you become very familiar with wild flora populated with hummingbirds on the way. Walking up the river you climb rocks and waterfalls, you swim across pools and when you get to the main-man 60- foot waterfall, you can swim around it in the large natural pools. At the top, you turn around and retrace your steps, jumping into pools along the route until you get back to the Devil’s Bridge starting point.
This 3-hour trek is adventurous, but it is not for the faint of heart. It requires a high level of fitness. Sandals, sneakers or running shoes are fine. Bring a waterproof camera to create a record of your daring do and a small backpack for a towel is a bonus. At lunch on the way back, ask about the myth of Devil’s Bridge.
Pitons
Ask a guide the words that best describes this climb and he will undoubtedly go speechless. The Pitons are the stunning and famous landmark of the Caribbean. Sheer beauty, and one of the reasons why it is known as “The Helen of the West.” Called Pitons because they rise vertically out of the sea to nearly 3000 feet in height and descend vertically to 2000 feet below sea level. The Twin Mountains, Gros and Petit Piton stand side by side on the island’s west coast. We will lead you to the top of Gros Piton. (The bigger of the two) You go straight up a very steep path for about two hours or an hour and a half if you’re up to the challenge. You revel in the ever changing views, a variety of bird life and wild mountain goats that may just run across your path! This climb is more than the exercise. The views will take your breath away. When you get to the top, you have the privilege of seeing what is probably the most beautiful view in the Caribbean; The island, spread out before you. St. Lucia will astound you! This climb is not only great exercise for the body but also for the eyes and mind!
