Visit France > Aquitaine
Between the blue of its Atlantic coast and the luxuriant green of its back country, Aquitaine extends over 5 départements. Click on each one to discover its region, whether you're a fan of history or gastronomy, or whether you love the peacefulness of the countryside, riverbank or ocean front.
In the glory of its wine and the sophistication of its cooking, the Bordelais is a magnificent gastronomic region and Bordeaux a capital of good living. It has retained, from the time of Louis XIV, a proportioned and classical architecture, found in the countless pale stone châteaux. But Bordeaux also moves to a Latin rhythm. It is a city of food lovers and revellers since its population comes from Aquitaine, that beautiful province that borders Spain. You're closer here to Bilbao and Toulouse than to Paris.
What's more pleasant, after a day of touring the old neighborhoods, than sitting down to a plate of Arcachon oysters at an outdoor café and savoring the briny flavor of the ocean - washing it down with a glass of Graves or Entre-Deux-Mers.
The Gironde is made up of three distinct entities, each with its own heritage: Bordeaux and its region, a piece of the Landes de Gascogne (Médoc, Pays de Buch, Landes de Bordeaux, Bazadais and a piece of the Grande-Lande), and the Guyenne Girondine (Libournais, Entre-deux-Mers).

The land of fortified towns during the Hundred Years War, the territory of the Cathars, a country claimed by both Gascony and Languedoc, a royal holding of Henri IV, crossed by the Bordeaux-Toulouse axis, Lot-et-Garonne has a unique art of living and is best discovered from the water.
Today the Landes region is divided into three distinct areas:
- the coast, which included 106 km of beaches backing onto the dunes and forest
- the Landes de Gascogne nature park (the largest man-made forest in Europe, planted to stop the spread of the marshland).
- and the back country (Chalosse, Tursan, Bas Armagnac) where you will discover the good humor of the Gascons.
