Visit France > Aquitaine > Perigord Noir > Châteaux Country

Part of the French kingdom under Henri IV, the Périgord bears the marks of ferocious battles between Lords, battles that tore it apart throughout the Middle Ages.

The area is teeming with castles, "bastides" fortified villages and parading grounds that add to it all a feeling of greatness and splendor. Castillon la Bataille is a name in history where many a fine sword crossed. It is here that the Hundred Year War ended.

All this fighting and conquests over rich, coverted land have left an unequaled architectural treasure in the Périgord magnified by the presence of numerous abbayes, churches and religous places in a area where religeon had a leading role.

An angel, flying over the Périgord is said to have let escape from his pouch a thousand stars that on touching the ground turned into castels. This "cradle of humankind", blessed by the Gods has an extraordinarily large choice of countrysides and landscapes.
