Visit France > Provence - Alpes - Côte d'Azur

According to local legend, after God created the earth, the sun, the mountains and the sea to shape our planet, the leftovers of each were used to create a paradise: Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, the land stretched between the summits of the Alps and the expanse of the Mediterranean sea.

True or false, the legend sums up the appeal of a territory referred to as "PACA" by the French. Twice the size of Delaware, it covers 12,125 square miles at the southeasternmost tip of France.

Provence - Alpes - Côte d'Azur 1

This departement is one of vast contrasts, It ranges from mountains (the Alpilles to the north, the Saint Baume and the Saint Victoire to the east) to plains and flat country (Camargue). The city of Marseille is a busy urban center but the creeks, beaches and ports have a more restful rhythme on this changing coastline.

The Bouches du Rhône has been the inspiration of creators as different as Cezanne and Christian Lacroix and those local crafters of the Santons from Aix. The annual meeting place for gypsies is at Saintes Maries de la Mer and the Cannebière was chosen for the card game scene in the film of the comic Raimu. In Arles the typical Feria or bull runs attracts visitors from both far and near, This departement represents Provence in all its splendor.

Marseille is a city apart from the rest of Provence. It is a large cosmopolitan city, the second largest in the country next to Paris. Its port is the most important and opens the city to the world through the Mediterranean Sea.

In contrast, Aix en Provence has remained more provincial in aspect and attracts those looking for a more Provencal flavor. Both are cities of science, technology and culture and play a major economic role in the Bouches du Rhône.

Alpes de Haute Provence (04)
Provence - Alpes - Côte d'Azur 1

This is a departement of contrasts with its high plains and mountains, fields of lavender and ski trails. It's the marriage of Provence and the Alps, described by the well known writer Jean Giono, with more than 500,000h. of protected natural sites.

West of Haut Verdon is the Val d'Allos nicknamed the French Colorado.

To the south, the famous canyons the Gorges de Verdon offer a beautiful spectacle of lakes, cliffs and wide horizons of the cultivated plains of Valensole.

Forcalquier, a town and area to the west is of a more Provencal spirit in that the climate is mild and the landscape is softer with its sloping hills and vineyards, Manosque, the point of Luberon, and the valley of the Durance with its crops of fruit and vegetables form the main tourist attractions of the departement.

Hautes Alpes (05)
Provence - Alpes - Côte d'Azur 1

This departement is formed of valleys canyons and mountains going from the northern Alps to Provence following the Napoleon's route to Gap, and ranges from 500m. to 4302m. in altitude. There is an alpine feeling in this departement due to its steep slopes, the abondance of snow and the mountain villages.

Its Provencal character remains true, however, because of the sunny days, the cooking, and of course that typical Provencal accent.

The eastern boundaries are sculpted out of the Alps and the Mount Ventoux; while in the south one finds the Luberon , between Cavaillon and Pertuis which follows along the Durance River.

The villages in this part are known to be charming so high up in the rocky chaine of the Luberon.

L'Arrière-Pays Varois (inland) is the interior of the Var formed by hills and valleys, plantations and pine forests. Because of its very sunny climate, the agricultural production is varied and plentiful. There are 37,000 ( approximately 90,000 acres ) of vineyards operated by 450 different vintners.
