On the lovely "Sisi" in Bavaria
The "Sisi Road" follows stations in the life of Elisabeth, nicknamed "Sisi," born into the Wittelsbach family of Bavaria. She became Empress of Austria, which also included a large part of Italy, upon her marriage to the Hapsburg Emperor Franz Joseph, and a few years later also became Queen of Hungary.

The "Sisi Road" leads to the castles and cities that played a major role in the life of the monarch. The westernmost point of the "Sisi Road" is the Fugger city Augsburg. Elisabeth's brother lived in Maximilian Street when he was an officer in Augsburg.

The young Sisi spent a light-hearted childhood a few miles from Augsburg in Wittelsbach Land around Aichach. In the Unterwittelsbach section of the town is the "Sisi Castle," for a long time the favourite summer residence of her father Duke Max. Her father also owned the nearby Kühbach Castle and the Rapperzell Hunting Castle.

Travellers along the "Sisi Road" can go from Augsburg or Aichach in less than an hour's drive to Munich, where Elisabeth of Austria was born, and to the Starnberg Lake, site of Possenhofen Castle, the summer residence of Sisi's mother Ludovika.

Across from Possenhofen lies Berg Castle near where Sisi's cousin, the eccentric Bavarian king Ludwig II, drowned in the lake. Ludwig met his beautiful cousin Elisabeth on Rose Island near Feldafing. The tourist route leads along the Romantic Road and in about two hours travellers on the trail of the lovely monarch reach the dream castle of her cousin the "fairy-tale king."

Neuschwanstein in Schwangau near Füssen is the highlight of a trip to Germany for many tourists.
