The Islands of the Aegean

Lesbos
Lesbos, the green jewel of the Aegean located in the northeast side of the bay, is an earthly paradise with healing springs and many beaches that charm visitors with the perfection of their shape and clear crystal waters.

A piece of land that broke off from Asia Minor to set itself in the blue waters of the Aegean Sea, Lesbos is the third-largest island, at 1630 square km, after Crete and Evoia.

The island is the birthplace of many famous names in art and literature, like the philosopher Theofrastos, the singer and guitar-player Arion, Sappho, Alkaio, Pittako, one of the seven wise men whose face was imprinted in many coins, the great painter Jakobidis, and the Nobel prize winner Elitis.

Chios
Although Chios ranks fifth among the islands in size, it may take first place in your heart! The island has countless places of beauty and invites you to explore them.

Airplanes and ships provide transportation to Chios. You need only book the tickets. The gentle Aegean breezes will accompany you on deck.  The island has everything, from flower-filled valleys and orange and lemon groves with an intoxicating fragrance, to picturesque villages with mysterious alleys and long beaches with golden sand and strangely colored pebbles. Many of the traditional villages have retained their beautiful medieval architecture.

Chios' traditional shipping industry has brought it prosperity and one-third or more of its inhabitants are sailors. The island flourished even in the Byzantine era, thanks to its geographical position and handicraft traditions.

Historical sites abound. The Chora can be characterized as the center of its civilization. There you can spend many hours visiting all the sights: the castle, southern gate, Turkish baths and Kria Vrissi will transport you back in time.

Then it will be time to visit Tzami to enjoy the sculptures and Byzantine and post-Byzantine discoveries from archaeological excavations. But the city tour does not end there. You should also visit the cathedral of Agioi Victores, the sublime Chios high school and the famous Library of Korais, where many rare collections of books and documents are kept.

Walking in the center of the island, you should visit the archaeological museum where you will have the chance to see the wonderful daughter of Chios, in copy. The busiest street of the island is called Aplotaria where the shops are side by side, offering whatever you desire.

Leaving the noisy but very impressive center of Chora, it’s time to put on your sport shoes and take the road to Kampos. The smells here are wonderful as there are many tangerine, orange, lemon and sour orange trees. The settlements that adorn the skirts of Chios are many, each with its own style. You should visit the picturesque town of Vrontados and enjoy the medieval castle in Volissos with the patron saint of the island, Agia Markella. Then you can walk in the arcades of the village of Mesta, under the observant eye of the locals.
