Visit Greece > Santorini > Firostéfani, Imerovigli, Oia, Akrotiri...
This morning we head to the magical, amazing, wonderful Oia!
On the road that leads to Oia, past Fira you will go through the village of Firostefani, which is actually an extension of Fira. This little oblong village built along the cliff is home to an impressive church, Aghios Gerasimos. Firostefani offers a wonderful view over the Caldeira, different from the one at Fira. The drop is much more abrupt.

Imerovigli means "day watch" and it was named many years ago by the local people, since it was the highest spot of the Caldera' s rim. Its inhabitants used to watch the sea for pirate attacks.
One of the most attractive places of Imerovigli is the castle of Scaros. It was used as the main dwelling by the Venetian leader Marko Sanouthos, who dominated the island in 1207. The castle protected the western entrance of the island from attacks. It included two portions, "Rocka" and an area where Roman aristocrats and Catholic bishops had their residence. The castle was never defeated during the 600 years of existence.
Imerovigli is a place over-sighting Caldera, ideal for observation, photographs and videos under an extraordinary variety of natural lights and colors. It is located at the highest point of the Caldera's rim giving from any point of the village a breathtaking view towards the volcano, the sea and the surrounding islets. Because of its proximity with FIRA (3 km), Imerovigli is connected with a public road or by an old path, offering a spectacular view as you walk along the rim.

Oia (or Pano Meria, Apanomeria, pronounced E-ah), facing south in a fishbone layout. The main pedestrian street connects its ends accross the top of the cliff, with many local branches. The village was also, devastated by the 1956 earthquake and has never fully recovered, but it is dramatic, stricking and quieter than tourist-frenzied Fira, although it's streets are also filled with expensive jewellery boutiques. Oia is famous for its imaginary sunset and its narrow passageways get crowded in the evenings. The most popular spot to watch sunset is by the Kastro walls. The central square, Nikolaou Nomikou, skirts the caldera. The town hosts a cultural centre, Greek art galleries as well as the usual handicrafts, souvenir and jewellery shops.

As seen on a zillion postcards, the characteristic classic view of Oia, is the bright white and blue of the church contrasting with the deep blue of the Aegean Sea in the background. Oia, is beautiful, exquisite small town and an ideal place for those seeking peace and quiet. Houses, paths, churches built up skillfully on the northern part of the island. All the forementioned exists in combination with the best golden sunset in the world.

A village built on the most irrelevant part of the island about 12 km from Fira at the southwestern tip on the most remote part of the island. The excavations in that area brought up the city of Acropolis, a fortified Venetian castle during the medieval years, which after the occupation of Santorini by the Turks was torn down. The remains of the castle are easily visible. There are two old churches in the village, Aghia Triada and Ipapandi tou Sotiros. As you are taking the road to Akrotiri, on your right, you will stay amazed from the fascinating view of the Caldera. The picturesque atmosphere by the view towards Fira and Oia will rivet you. There are many hotels around the area and also many taverns.

Continue along to the Red Beach. An amazing place if ever there was one. After leaving your car in the parking lot, take the steep path which will lead you to the other side of an immense rock to discover a lunar landscape: a creek covered with black volcanic sand surrounded by red cliffs. The colors form a striking contrast. The undertow hits the black pebbles as your feet tread the lava dust.
To end this second day, continue to the lighthouse, located at the most distant end of the island. There, far from everything, you can also enjoy a uniquely Santorinian panorama and sunset.
