Visit Netherlands > Gouda

Gouda attracts over a million tourists a year, thanks to its history. From the gothic architecture of the city hall on the market place, to the public weigh house known as 'de Waag,' dating from the 17th century, from St. John's church, the oldest transept church in the Netherlands with its famous stained glass windows painted by the Crabeth brothers and 123 meters long, to the many ancient houses along the canals and the picturesque streets...  Gouda is delicious - even without cheese!

Stroll through the historic heart of Gouda. Since the town has over 300 monuments, you obviously can't see it all in just a day.

The venerable ancient City Hall of Gouda became the core of the weekly 'Kaasmarkt' cheese market; a fine, bustling trading scene.

During the summer, it is definitely worth your while to combine a walking tour with a visit to the farm cheese and trade market. This market takes place from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. every Thursday from mid-June to August. The cheese is sold at the market in the traditional manner.

In 1667 the Gouda city council acquired the right to levy duties on this profitable trade.

1668 therefore saw the construction of the 'De Waag' weighhouse across from the city hall. This was the place where the cheeses supplied and sold were weighed and taxes were determined.

Nowadays, visitors can have their weight measured in cheese, test their knowledge of cheese and naturally sample some cheese.

The Moriaan, located in the Westhaven, was once the home of a Gouda merchant, who sold spices, tobacco, coffee and tea during the 18th century. It was re-opened in April 2007 as the National Pharmaceutical Museum, presenting the history and development of the pharmacy and the development of medicine in the 21st century.

The Art and Antiques itinerary, available at the tourist office, offers a suprising selection of artistic destinations. The walk takes you to 27 spots of artistic interest in the city, such as galleries, antique shops, artists' studios, museums and other locations.

More than 400 specialty shops of diverse size for every taste are scattered through the city's historic center. Most of the stores are open 6 days a week, as well as Thursday evening. Around 30 good addresses are provided free by the tourist office, located in the marketplace.

The day begins at the Van Berg tea house (Lange Groenendaal 31, tel. 31 182 529975), where you can see how traditional stroopwafels (molasses waffles) are made from Monday to Friday until 1 p.m. Take advantage of the stop to enjoy a little cup of coffee with them.

In the Burgerhal, you can sample a platter of cheese served with a glass of liqueur.

The fish restaurant Scheeps (Westhaven 4, tel. +31 182 517572) is an inviting place located along the Westhaven canal. It's known for its local specialties and fish. In the summer you can dine outdoors.

The Hotel de Zam (Markt 34, tel. +31 182 689976), once the oldest hotel in the country, was transformed into a café and restaurant. Many celebrities have come here. The old stables have been converted into De Goudsche Stal restaurant.

Along the Gouwe, the canal that flows in the heart of the old town, you'll find Korenbeurs and Visbank (the grain exchange and fish market). These two 17th century buildings are an impressive reminder of what made Gouda's importance in the old days, because of its location on the water: a commercial center for fish, grain, wine and beer. Today you can take a cruise on the old canals.
