Carry-on luggage
Some security reminders. A lot of people still forget...
In late 2006, new on-board safety regulations came into effect, but having flown a number of times in 2008, I notice there are still a lot of items being pointed at in the security checkpoint. Lipstick? No problem. But mascara, lip gloss, nail polish... remember when you're packing your carry-on to put them into a little plastic bag. The bag has to be a clear zip-loc type so that it can be tightly sealed. The law limits the amount of liquid that you can carry on board: not more than 100 ml per container, with the total not exceeding 1 liter, placed in a single plastic bag. You have to present the bag for inspection upon request.
The rule applies to every imaginable liquid or gel:
- Water
- Beverages
- Creams or lotions
- Oils
- Toothpaste
- Deodorants
- Sprays
- Shaving foam
- Mascara
- Etc.
Exceptions:
- Medications
- Special diet requirements
- Baby food
- Liquids purchased at the airport after the security point
As for lighters, the rules are more diversified. In many cases, they're not allowed in carry-on luggage, though in some cases one lighter is permitted. It depends on the airport. For example, in Terminal 3 at Orly, there is a smoking patio after customs, so a lighter is allowed. For dedicated smokers, put an old disposable lighter in your bag and another in the outer pocket of your suitcase for your arrival, so you're not caught without.
Bon voyage!
